This is a capstone project that showcases developing skills in a project that attempts to "solve" a complex issue. N'Tuned is a company that focuses on mitigating social inequality within the automotive industry through education.
Due to historical circumstances, the automotive industry has been predominantly white male-dominated, both as industry employees and automobile owners. This has caused a stigma toward women and people of color who are rightfully or wrongfully assumed to have little knowledge from the basics of car maintenance and mechanics to how proper pricing works within dealerships, service centers, and repair shops. These barriers have been proven to hinder women’s and people of color’s participation, advancement, and inclusion in the automotive industry, especially as customers, contributing to the broader societal issue of social disparity and inequality.
Most of the population in the US owns cars meaning, the demand for dealerships and repair shops is relatively high, but that doesn’t mean the customers are confident or enjoying each experience. Through research, it is evident that even though big car brands such as Ford and General Motors express their advocation for social inclusion through their brand, this does not mean every Ford and GM dealership is following the brand’s rules. Dealerships are breeding grounds for social inequality because of the want to reach sales goals. Particularly through the implementation of pricing markups that disproportionately impact women and certain racial or ethnic groups. This issue revolves around the documented evidence of higher markups imposed on individuals based on their gender or race during the vehicle purchasing process or vehicle repair visits. Now this issue stems from the fact it isn’t common knowledge to know car mechanics or how the automotive industry works but the lack of information is how dealerships and automotive professionals have the power and advantage to make deceptive tactics and get away with it. If the root of the problem is the lack of knowledge then providing a solution to targeted users with the information they need will allow individuals to enter dealerships and repair shops with confidence with the knowledge to back it up.
